Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has confirmed that the government has taken stringent measures to prevent arms smuggling into Bangladesh ahead of the national elections scheduled for February.
Speaking to reporters in Dhaka on Saturday after visiting the BADC Seed Building near Gabtoli bus terminal, the adviser said law enforcement agencies are actively working to recover looted weapons and prevent any new influx of firearms.
“Arms recovery is a continuous process. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure no weapons enter the country-not only during the elections but at all times,” he said, expressing confidence that illegal arms would be cleared before the polls.
Jahangir Alam noted that additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed at key entry points and border areas, while intelligence agencies remain on high alert to detect and intercept illicit weapons.
He stressed that ensuring a safe and peaceful electoral environment is a top priority and urged the public to cooperate with authorities.
On border security, he stated that the country’s frontiers are “fully secure and protected” and commended border residents for their vigilance.
The adviser also addressed online rumours and political speculation surrounding the elections, including questions about the Awami League’s participation.
“Freedom of speech now allows everyone to express their opinions. Previously, many things could not be published. Ultimately, the decision rests with the people,” he added.
