Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Tuesday said no specific date for the next general election was discussed during his recent meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission (EC) headquarters, the CEC confirmed that preparations were progressing with a tentative timeframe in mind, likely between February and April 2026.

“The Election Commission will announce the date and schedule for the polls in due course,” Nasir stated.

The meeting between the CEC and the Chief Adviser took place on Friday, their first since 13 June. During the earlier meeting, Yunus had suggested that the national election could potentially be held in the week preceding Ramadan in 2026-provided that all logistical and institutional preparations were completed in time.

That suggestion was made in London during discussions with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who had also proposed holding the election before Ramadan.

“February emerged as a possible window following that London meeting, and April has also been mentioned. We are proceeding with preparations based on those two possibilities,” said the CEC.
He further noted that the Commission’s current focus is solely on the national election.

“The Chief Adviser has not mentioned local government polls in his recent public statements. The commitments he is making to the nation, both domestically and abroad, are centred entirely on the national election. Our preparations are aligned with that commitment,” he added.
The Election Commission is expected to continue internal planning and logistical readiness in the coming months, ahead of a formal announcement on the election schedule.
