The interim government stated on Monday that claims of a sharp rise in crime across Bangladesh this year are not fully backed by official data.
Citing Police Headquarters statistics, Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said crime levels in most major categories have remained stable over the past 10 months.
While recent media reports have highlighted an alleged spike in criminal activities, Azad said the data from September 2024 to June 2025 does not indicate a significant upward trend. “In fact, serious crimes appear to be either steady or declining,” he noted.
He acknowledged that a few crime categories have seen some increase but stressed that this does not constitute a nationwide crime wave.
“Citizens should stay alert but have confidence in law enforcement, as the overall trends show stability,” Azad added.
To support the government’s stance, he shared statistical tables covering crime trends from the past five years and the most recent ten months—based on data from police headquarters.
