No chance of joining new govt: Dr Yunus

Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has said there is no possibility of him being part of the next elected government, expected to be formed through the 13th national parliamentary election in April next year.

He made the remark while responding to a journalist’s question during a dialogue hosted by Chatham House, a UK-based policy institute, on Wednesday (June 11) in London.

When asked whether he would like to join the next government once the election is held and a new administration takes over, Dr Yunus waved both hands and said, “No way, no way.”

He said, “I don’t think any of our advisers will do so either. Our responsibility is to ensure a smooth transition to democracy and to make the people happy. … We want to transfer power to the elected government. Our main goal is to make sure the election is held properly. This is very important. If the election goes wrong, then it can’t be fixed.”

During the discussion, the Chief Adviser also answered several questions, including on the July revolution and India’s aggressive policy on Bangladesh.
