Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Md. Rezaul Karim (PPM-Service) said – Extensive preparations have been made to conduct this year’s Shahjalal Shrine Urs in a more orderly and holy environment. The monitoring committee, consisting of representatives of various sectors including the police administration, shrine authorities, scholars and journalists, will always monitor during the Urs. In the interest of protecting the sanctity of the shrine during the Urs, this time, devotees are being asked to refrain from all shirk and bidaati activities, including prostration at the shrine. Women should stay with the veil. No one should organize alcohol and marijuana gatherings. The monitoring committee will keep an eye on these issues at all times. In addition, various police teams will be on alert at all times in the shrine premises. All anti-social-un-Islamic and chaotic activities will be prevented. The police will also work to prevent theft, robbery and other activities related to the shrine. Law enforcement officers will be stationed in plain clothes.
The SMP Commissioner said these things at a press briefing at the shrine premises after Asr on Friday (May 16).
In response to questions from journalists, he said that banners have been drawn in front of the shrine of Shahjalal Rah. so that no one can prostrate anywhere except during prayers. However, more banners need to be drawn in different places in the shrine area. The shrine authorities will be informed about this.
Former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Ariful Haque Chowdhury, acting president of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP Rezaul Hasan Qays Lodi, Khatib of Bandarbazar Central Jame Mosque Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, president of the National Imam Association Sylhet Metropolitan Branch Maulana Habib Ahmed Shihab, Hazrat Shahjalal Rah. Maulana Shah Momshad Ahmed, member secretary of the Tawhidi Kafila, and Maulana Neyamatullah Khasdbiri, teacher of Darus Salam Madrasa, were among those present.
Also present were the concerned officers of the army and RAB-9, the shrine authorities, and the leaders of the Urs Supervision Committee formed by the police.
After the press briefing, the SMP Commissioner inspected the shrine and the shrine premises. During this time, he spoke to the scholars, the shrine authorities, journalists, and members of the law enforcement agencies.
It is worth noting that the Urs will be held at the Shahjalal Rah. Shrine on May 18 and 19. In the meantime, devotees have started coming to the shrine. Many devotees have brought cattle and goats as well as vowed items. The police have already made extensive preparations to maintain the law and order situation. Necessary security measures have been taken.
