Nicholas Pooran, regarded as one of the premier T20 batters globally, has announced his retirement from international cricket for the West Indies at the age of 29.
The decision marks a significant shift in his career, allowing him to commit to various lucrative franchise tournaments around the world fully.
Hailing from Trinidad, Pooran represented the West Indies in 167 matches, becoming a cornerstone of their white-ball setup. His departure is seen as a major moment, not just due to his talent, but also because of his relatively young age and global profile.
Pooran had already opted out of the ongoing T20I series against England to recuperate after playing for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is also set to feature in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and The Hundred in England this summer.
Cricket West Indies issued a statement praising his contributions:
“We salute his achievements and thank him for the moments he has given fans across the region and beyond. We wish him all the very best in the next phase of his journey.”
Though he follows in the footsteps of other players like Heinrich Klaasen – who also recently stepped away from internationals – Pooran’s retirement carries added weight due to his status and longevity with the team.
