‘Next seven months will be critical for economy’

The interim government considered that the next seven months will be critical for Bangladesh’s economic future, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said on Thursday.

Talking to the media, the press secretary said the interim government, under the leadership of Dr. Yunus, has announced an ambitious initiative to increase Chittagong Port’s capacity six fold-to 7.86 million TEUs.

“This expansion plan reflects the government’s awareness of the stakes,” Alam said in a statement shared on his verified Facebook page.

He underscored that such a transformation would not be feasible without the involvement of leading global port operators.

“If this partnership succeeds, it will send a clear message to international investors and businesses: Bangladesh is open for business,” he said.

“The next seven months could determine the trajectory of the country-they could make or break Bangladesh,” Shafiqul Alam warned.

Reflecting on global trade dynamics, the press secretary pointed out that a shift is underway in the global economic order, which was established after Bretton Woods and institutionalized through the WTO. He said that countries like Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Vietnam, and Malaysia thrived by developing export-driven economies focused on the U.S. and European markets.

Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines also joined this path, though more gradually. South Asia, however, remained behind in this race.

“Now, the opportunity may finally be knocking for Bangladesh. The question is: can we rise to the occasion?” Alam asked. He acknowledged that politics will undoubtedly influence the outcome, but noted with optimism that even previously resistant groups.
