ALPB sits today

UNB, Dhaka :
Ruling Awami League is likely to finalize its candidates for the reserved women seats in Parliament today. Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) will sit today evening at the official Ganobhaban residence of the party chief and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
A total of 822 candidates from across the country collected nomination papers from the Awami League president’s Dhanmondi office to avail the opportunity.
Hectic lobbying is going on for the ruling party blessing to become Members of Parliament against the seats kept reserved for women.
The election to 50 reserved parliamentary seats for women will be held on April 3.
According to the schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is March 9 while scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on March 11. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 18.
Out of the 50 reserved seats, the ruling Awami League-led six-party alliance will contest the polls in 41 seats, while Jatiya Party in six and the coalition of independent candidates in three seats.
According to rules, the number of reserved seats is allocated among the political parties and the alliance in proportion to their representation in Parliament.
In the 10th parliament, ruling AL-led six-party alliance has representation of 248 MPs – AL 232, Workers’ Party 6, JSD 5, Anwar Hossain Manju-led Jatiya Party-JP 2, Tarikat Fedaration 2 and BNF 1 while Ershad-led Jatiya Party has 34 MPs, and the rest 15 are independent MPs.
Out of the 300 parliamentary seats, three seats – Jessore-1 and 2, and Tangail-8 – remain vacant following the January 5 parliamentary polls.
According to the party sources, only a few members of women MPs from reserve seats in the 9th parliament will get the chance to be chosen for the 10th parliament.
A highly placed source in the party said that the Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) will not select anyone who has been involved in controversy as its MP.
In this connection, he said the ALPB might select at least one woman MP against reserved seats from each of the 19 greater districts.
The nomination seekers are busy running after the frontline leaders of the party at the last moment to confirm their ticket as a woman MP.
On January 19, Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina had an interview session with the nomination seekers against the reserved women seats in Parliament at her official residence Ganobhaban.
