New record of container handling at Ctg Port

Chittagong Port Authority ( CPA) has created a new milestone of container handling on Thursday .
CPA made this record by handling 7,802 TEUs containers on Thursday .
This is the highest record of container handling in the history of CP during the period of 128 years .
Mentionable that on that very day, the port users forum in their meeting expressed annoyance over the capacity of the port in next five years. Port sources said the yesterday’s record of container handling is the proof of capacity of handling .
Port sources said, 7802 TEUS containers were handled on Thursday and this is new milestone for the port. The first highest record of handling was 7,403 containers handled on May 30 last. Port officials assume that following the hard labour of the officials and workers , it became possible to increase the gross prospect of the port which indicates the efficiency and capability of the port.
Director (Transport) of CP Moshiur Rahman Beg told the New Nation that in the history of Chittagong port since British regime , highest record of containers handled which proved the capacity of the existing main harbor of th e country.
Chairman of CPA Rear Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmd said the country is advancing economically and beside the imports, exports, the container handling gradually increasing .He also said following the use of modern equipments of handling , the progress is achieved which will remain as a new milestone in the history of Chittagong Port, a CPA sources said.
Meanwhile the business community in Chittagong expressed concern over the handling capacity of Chittagong Port .
This view of annoyance expressed at the meeting of views exchange with the business community at Chitagong Chamber auditorium on Thursday . Port Users Forum arranged the meeting and President of the Forum Mahbubul Alam presided over it. Member of the parliamentary standing committee on Ports & Shipping , MA Latif MP graced the occasion as chief guest.
The meet demanded to start works of Bay Terminal and Bulk Terminal immediately to face the cargo handling with the increasing trend of imports and exports through this port.
The meet also criticized the Port, Customs and private container depots for lack of coordination among them in the ports operational activities, crisis of handing equipments, container congestion and realisation of excess charges by shipping agents and freight forwarders.
The chief guest in his address said the existing capacity of the port can not be expanded more than 25% and if the present progress of the port is continued uninterrupted, Chittagong Port will be failed to take load of handling by next 5 years.
With the views of allegations and criticism, Member(Admn & Planning) of CPA Jafar Alam told in comparison with 2005-06, Chittagong Port achieved progress 45% in container handling and 94% in equipments progress. Besides, 138 container handling equipments now under process of procurement within short possible time.
