Bodies of 7 more Saudi fire victims set to return home
The bodies of seven more Bangladeshi workers killed in a fire at a sofa factory in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh will arrive in Dhaka on Saturday morning, nearly three months after the tragedy.
They are scheduled to reach Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:05am on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-336), the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment said on Friday, citing the Foreign Ministry and the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh.
The fire broke out at the factory on 9 August, killing 16 Bangladeshi workers on the spot. The bodies of nine victims were brought back to Bangladesh in the first batch on 27 August.
The remaining seven could not be identified immediately as their bodies were severely charred. Their identities were later confirmed through DNA tests.
According to the Bangladesh Embassy, flights from Riyadh have remained suspended since 10 October, forcing the authorities to transport the bodies by road to Jeddah first.
They are being flown to Dhaka from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah on a Biman flight.
The seven victims have been identified as Md Shahin of Naogaon Sadar; Md Hasibul Hasan Shuvo, Minhaj Pramanik, Md Masidul Sardar Sajib and Md Sagor Ali of Atrai; and Mohammad Shamim and Md Sabbir Hossain of Naldanga in Natore.
The ministry said the bodies would be handed over to their relatives or representatives after arriving at the airport.
