Bangladesh, Germany commit to widen ties

Bangladesh and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations, with both sides putting greater emphasis on trade and investment, skills development, renewable energy, climate action, migration and mobility.

The commitment was made during a meeting between German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The meeting reviewed a broad range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest, while the two sides also discussed ways to expand cooperation under the broader Bangladesh-EU partnership.

The State Minister appreciated Germany’s longstanding engagement and development cooperation with Bangladesh and expressed Bangladesh’s interest in expanding bilateral cooperation in several areas, including trade and investment, education, skills development, renewable energy, climate action, culture, and migration and mobility.

Ambassador Lotz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Bangladesh, highlighting the importance of concluding a Bangladesh-EU free trade agreement at an early stage.

The German envoy also emphasised enhanced cooperation in the aviation sector, alongside greater trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

During the meeting, Lotz highlighted Bangladesh’s post-election stability and said there was growing interest among German companies in the country’s investment-friendly environment.

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to working together in relevant international forums and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest at the regional and global levels.

Bangladesh and Germany have maintained longstanding development and economic cooperation, with Germany remaining an important partner in areas ranging from development assistance and climate action to trade, skills development and migration.

The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, with both sides expressing confidence that continued high-level engagement would provide further impetus to the longstanding Bangladesh-Germany partnership.
