BD receive share of record earnings from World Cup football

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has agreed in principle to a proposal to distribute a portion of the record revenue generated from the World Cup (WC) among the organisation’s 211 member associations.

But no final decision has yet been reached regarding the specific amount each member association will receive.

Bangladesh is also one of FIFA’s member nations. As such, Bangladesh will also receive a share of the revenue generated from the World Cup.

In a letter sent to the heads of the six confederations, FIFA President Infantino stated that the matter would be discussed in detail at the FIFA Council meeting on October 15.

UEFA, the governing body of European football, and CONCACAF, the football confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean, proposed providing at least $10 million to each member association. The amount of funding for various member associations may differ during the 2027-30 cycle.

ESPN has obtained a copy of the letter from the FIFA President, in which Infantino expresses broad support for the core proposal. However, he noted that approval from the FIFA Council is required to determine the financial amount, distribution method, and other details.

Infantino’s letter states, ‘When your proposals are considered together, a broad consensus on a key issue becomes evident-FIFA’s financial success must benefit football and FIFA’s 211 member associations.’

Infantino also cited a statement he made upon assuming the role of FIFA President in 2016. He said, “FIFA’s money is your money-the money of the member associations.”

Infantino has made it clear that the financial figure proposed so far cannot be considered a final decision. In his words, while the proposed amount and the distribution process are new, the underlying principle is not.

All eyes are now on the FIFA Council meeting scheduled for October 15. Decisions regarding what portion of the World Cup’s record revenue will be distributed among member associations-and the process for doing so-are expected to emerge from that meeting.
