Educational institutions ordered to expand rooftop solar use

The Ministry of Education has directed all educational institutions across the country to install rooftop solar power systems at suitable locations to help achieve the government’s target for on-grid solar generation.

The Secondary and Higher Education Division issued the directive in an order sent to the concerned parties on September 23.

The order said the move followed a circular issued by the Cabinet Division to ensure greater use of solar power in government offices. The Power Division has subsequently set a target for on-grid solar power generation.

To help meet the target, educational institutions have been instructed to install rooftop solar systems at suitable locations under the ‘OpEx’ model, using private investment or funds from the institutions themselves.

The Education Ministry said instructions had already been issued to promote extensive use of solar power at key government offices, including Bangabhaban, the Cabinet Division, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Planning Commission and the Finance Division.

The latest directive is part of the broader government initiative to increase the use of solar energy.
According to the ministry, other government offices and educational institutions will also have to ensure maximum use of solar power in phases.

The directive is aimed at expanding on-grid solar power generation across government and educational facilities as part of the government’s wider solar energy target.
