‘Govt plans specialised univ for blue economy’
The government is working to develop Bangladesh’s blue economy and plans to establish a specialised university focusing on the sector in the future, Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Wednesday.
He made the remarks while speaking at a scholarship distribution ceremony jointly organised by the Marketing Alumni Association of Dhaka University and Meghna Group of Industries (MGI) at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.
The minister said the government is working to develop the country’s human resources by equipping young people with the skills needed to meet future challenges.
“The government is giving the highest priority to the education sector to improve the country’s education system,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of exposure to different cultures and experiences, Milon said such exposure helps people analyse problems from multiple perspectives.
He urged students not to limit themselves to a single field, but to apply their knowledge, talents and skills across different areas.
Speaking about the gap between academia and industry, the education minister said major companies and industries in Bangladesh need to give greater importance to strengthening ties between the two sectors.
“It is unfortunate that big companies and industries in our country do not attach enough importance to academia-industry linkage,” he said.
Referring to China, Milon said industries there have established polytechnic institutes within industrial facilities, enabling engineers to teach students while allowing students to gain practical experience by working in those industries.
“Such a linkage is also necessary in our country,” he added.
Addressing the students, he said, “The people before me on Wednesday will build the Bangladesh of tomorrow. Our intellect is in no way inferior to that of citizens of other countries.”
Milon also praised MGI’s corporate social responsibility initiative to provide scholarships to university students and urged other corporate organisations to come forward with similar initiatives to support education.
The event, titled “MGI-MAA Scholarship 2026”, was jointly organised by MGI and the DU Marketing Department Alumni Association to provide scholarships to 90 students of the university’s Marketing Department.
