Love, Betrayal and Loss
The handwritten pages of Mariam Khatun, who was claimed to be the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, recovered after her death at a parliament members’ residential complex, portray a young woman grappling with betrayal, unshared love and a deep sense of loss.
In her writings, the 19-year-old reportedly described entering a relationship with complete trust, only to feel betrayed after realising that the person she had trusted was no longer on her side. Her words reflect a growing sense of disillusionment with someone she had once believed in.
In another passage, Mariam wrote about the pain of loving a married man. She reportedly called herself foolish for treating someone else’s husband as her own and reflected on the difficulty of sharing the person she loved.
For her, she wrote, losing someone completely felt more dignified than having only a part of them.
Elsewhere, she described feeling deceived and used. She reportedly compared herself to a piece in a game she had entered in good faith, believing what began between them was simply a friendship.
One of the pages was written on National Parliament letterhead. In it, Mariam reportedly expressed the pain of having “lost” while the person she trusted had “won” – a loss she linked directly to the trust she had placed in him.
Yet amid that anguish, her words also conveyed a striking outward composure. She reportedly wrote that the smile she continued to wear would one day become the cause of the other person’s downfall.
Taken together, the writings offer a deeply personal account of how Mariam reportedly experienced the relationship – moving from trust and affection to feelings of betrayal, exclusion and emotional hurt.
The precise circumstances surrounding the notes, however, remain part of the ongoing investigation, and their evidentiary significance will ultimately be determined through the legal process.
Mariam’s body was recovered from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 of the National Parliament Members’ Residential Complex, known as NAM Bhaban, in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, at around 7pm on Sunday. Police later sent the body for autopsy and collected evidence from the scene.
According to the case statement, Mariam married Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam under Islamic law in June and subsequently lived at the flat with the lawmaker and his first wife, Maksuda Islam.
Her father, SM Masum Billah, has alleged that Nazrul and Maksuda subjected Mariam to physical and mental torture after the marriage and that she told her family about the alleged abuse by telephone on several occasions.
He subsequently filed a case under Section 306 of the Penal Code against Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s maternal uncle Md Obaidur Rahman, accusing them of abetting her suicide.
The allegations have not been established in court.
