Home Affairs Senior Secy visits Sylhet prison

Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, inspected the central prison in Sylhet on Saturday.

He first visited the old prison and subsequently the central prison located at Badaghat. Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury was present during the visit on Saturday afternoon.

The Home Secretary’s visit and discussions with relevant officials took place just one day after a high-level meeting at the office of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed MP. The meeting resulted in a decision to transfer the land of the old Sylhet prison to the Sylhet City Corporation for the establishment of an aesthetic park and a Liberation War museum.

Industries, Commerce, and Textiles & Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir MP and City Corporation Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury had previously sent a Demi-Official (DO) letter to the Home Minister, requesting the transfer of the prison land to the Sylhet City Corporation to provide city residents with an open green space for walking and fresh air.

In response to the letter, the Ministry of Home Affairs formed a high-level committee.
The committee conducted an on-site inspection and submitted a report recommending the transfer of the land to the Sylhet City Corporation.

Last Thursday, at a meeting presided over by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed MP, the report was reviewed. A unanimous decision was reached to transfer the land to the Sylhet City Corporation for the construction of a park and a Liberation War museum, named after Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan, on the site of the old prison.

Attendees at the meeting included Industries, Commerce, and Textiles & Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir MP; Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury; Home Ministry Senior Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury; Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Mashiur Rahman; Inspector General of Prisons (Acting) Colonel Mohammad Mostafa Kamal; and other relevant senior officials.
