Road accidents rising in Sylhet 47 people killed in August
The second-highest number of road accident fatalities in a month in Sylhet division this year was recorded in August, when 47 people were killed and 122 injured in 35 accidents.
This was the second-highest monthly death toll from road accidents in the division this year. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in May, when 51 people were killed. The Sylhet Divisional Committee of Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA) released the report on Sunday.
In August, 24 people were killed in 10 accidents on the Sylhet section of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Of them, 15 were killed in three road accidents in Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet district.
Sylhet district recorded the highest number of road accident fatalities in the division in August, while Sunamganj and Moulvibazar recorded the lowest.
The report cited excessive speeding, reckless overtaking without following traffic rules, the operation of unlicensed and unfit vehicles on highways, failure of motorcyclists and riders to use standard helmets, lack of pedestrian awareness, and road construction defects as the main causes of road accidents in August.
