Muktagachha launches 3-day fisheries prog
National Fisheries Fortnight 2026 began in Muktagachha, Mymensingh, on Sunday with a colourful rally, fish fry release and discussion meeting.
The three-day programme is being implemented under the joint initiative of the Muktagachha Upazila Administration and the Department of Fisheries, Mymensingh.
Various programmes are being organised in Muktagachha to mark National Fisheries Fortnight 2026 under the theme, “A Self-Reliant Nation Through Silver Fish, Bangladesh First.”
The three-day programme is being jointly organised by the Upazila Administration and the Department of Fisheries from August 16 to 18. The programme began with a colourful rally at 11:30am on Sunday. The rally paraded through important roads of the upazila before returning to the upazila parishad premises. At 11:45am, fish fry were released into the upazila parishad pond. An inaugural and discussion meeting was held at the Upazila Parishad premises at noon. On the occasion, selected individuals were awarded for their outstanding contributions to fish farming at the local level.
Mymensingh-5 (Muktagachha) constituency MP Mohammad Zakir Hossain attended the inaugural programme as the chief guest. He said, “Fish is one of the major sources of animal protein in our country. Proper management and conservation of fisheries resources, along with increased use of modern technology, can enable the fisheries sector to play a greater role in the country’s economy and employment generation.”
Muktagachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Krishna Chandra chaired the programme. In his presidential remarks, he said, “The Upazila Administration and the Department of Fisheries are working in coordination to conserve fisheries resources and increase fish production in Muktagachha. I urge fish farmers and all concerned to adopt modern methods and become more aware of fish breeding and conservation in natural water bodies.”
Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer, Muktagachha, Tanvir Ahmed, said, “As in previous years, National Fisheries Fortnight is being observed this year to raise public awareness and encourage greater participation in the development and conservation of the country’s fisheries resources. We seek the participation and cooperation of people from all walks of life in the upazila.”
An awareness meeting on the conservation and development of fisheries resources will be held at the upazila parishad premises. At noon, an exhibition of animal-based food products will be organised for the public as part of the Fisheries Fortnight programme.
A quiz competition for school and college students will be held at the upazila parishad premises on Tuesday. The evaluation and closing ceremony of National Fisheries Fortnight 2026 will be held at 11:30am.
