Security ramps up over 15 August

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has stepped up security across the capital amid security concerns surrounding 15 August, with additional personnel deployed and surveillance and searches intensified to safeguard residents and prevent any possible sabotage or disruption.

According to a DMP statement, security has been reinforced at key entry points, critical installations and crowded locations, including metro stations, bus terminals, launch terminals, railway stations and shopping malls.

DMP said members of the Detective Branch and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime have been assigned operational duties.

SWAT, bomb disposal and K-9 units will conduct security sweeps at sensitive and crowded areas, while Quick Response Teams remain on standby for emergencies.

Key locations will also be monitored through CCTV cameras and drones. Plainclothes intelligence teams have also been deployed.

Recently, law enforcement agencies have increased surveillance over possible activities of banned organisation Awami League and its affiliated organisations ahead of 15 August. 

Police have already reported the arrest of 53 people in Dhaka’s Vatara area over alleged preparations for a gathering involving members of the banned organisation. 

The heightened security comes as DMP reported 512 arrests and 48 cases across the capital in the past 24 hours.

DMP also urged residents to immediately report any suspicious person, object or activity to law enforcement agencies.
