4 killed in Chakaria bus-leguna collision
Four people were killed and five others seriously injured in a head-on collision between a passenger leguna and an air-conditioned bus in Chakaria of Cox’s Bazar on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred around 6:30am in front of Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque in Nayapara area of Khutakhali union, police and local sources said.
The deceased Jasim Uddin, 25, son of late Motiur Rahman of Segunbagicha area in Khutakhali; Md Rafique, 28, son of late Abul Kashem of West Gajaria in Eidgaon; Md Shahed, 27, son of late Manzur Alam of Shiapara in Phulchhari; and Md Ziabur Haque, 25, son of Aminul Haque of Natun Office area in Khutakhali.
Malumghat Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Shamsuzzaman said the two vehicles involved in the accident had been taken into police custody. The process of handing over the bodies to the victims’ families was underway.
According to police and locals, the unregistered passenger leguna was
travelling from Eidgaon towards Chakaria when a passenger AC bus of Lal-Shobuj Paribahan, coming from the opposite direction, collided with it head-on in the Khutakhali Nayapara area.
The impact tore off the roof of the leguna and left the vehicle badly mangled.
Nine passengers travelling in the leguna were injured in the crash. Local residents rescued the victims and took them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital and Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital.
One victim died at the Malumghat hospital, while three others died at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
The five seriously injured passengers were identified as Sarwar, 19, and his father Syed Alam, 50, of Napitkhali in Eidgaon; Ziabur Haque, 40, of Natun Office area in Khutakhali; Delwar Hossain, 35, of Medhakachhapia; and Syed Karim, 30, of Kirantali in Teknaf.
Sarwar, Syed Alam, Ziabur Haque and Delwar are undergoing treatment at Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital, while Syed Karim is being treated at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the accident and helped rescue the injured.
As the leguna was completely wrecked in the collision, traffic on the highway remained suspended for around one hour.
