NCP convoy attacked in Sylhet

The convoy of National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders came under two separate stone-pelting attacks in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet on Thursday, damaging the windows of several vehicles. No injuries were reported.

The incident took place while NCP Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam and other party leaders were visiting the families of seven people killed during
the July Uprising.

Police said security measures had been taken ahead of the programme, with personnel deployed at key locations, including Choumuhani intersection.

Witnesses said a group chanted slogans against the NCP convoy when it arrived at Golapganj Municipality Hall around 1:00pm. Later, as the convoy left the venue for Kanaighat, stones were thrown at the vehicles.

Golapganj Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shah Alam said one stone damaged a vehicle’s glass, but no one was hurt. He added that police escorted the convoy to ensure security.

Later, around 3:00pm, the convoy faced another obstruction at Panchmile Bazar, where another stone-pelting incident was reported.

Sarjis Alam alleged that BNP activists were behind the attacks. In a Facebook post, he accused “BNP terrorists” of vandalising their vehicles.

Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun said there were two isolated incidents of stone-pelting but security arrangements were maintained. He said police and BGB personnel were deployed and the NCP’s scheduled programmes later continued peacefully.
