‘Myanmar to take back 3 lakh Rohingyas from Bangladesh’

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday said Myanmar has agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya refugees currently living in Malaysia following diplomatic negotiations between the two countries.

He also said Myanmar had agreed to repatriate 300,000 Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh as part of a broader repatriation effort, according to The Star.

Speaking at a meeting with local voters in Chennah, Anwar stressed the importance of maintaining constructive ties with Myanmar, saying the agreement was reached through dialogue and careful diplomacy.

“They have now agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya from Malaysia and 300,000 Rohingya from Bangladesh,” he said.

“These matters require careful diplomacy.”

According to The Star, Anwar also said he had instructed Malaysia’s inspector-general of police to take firm action against any Rohingya refugees found disrupting public order.

“I have already warned them, and yesterday I instructed the inspector-general of police that I do not want Rohingya disrupting roads and public places. This is Malaysia. They cannot disturb us. The police will take action,” he said.

Anwar noted that calls to deport Rohingya refugees had previously been difficult to implement because Myanmar had refused to receive them.

“People say, ‘Send them back.’ But where do we send them? Previously, Myanmar did not want to receive them,” he said.

He added that the refugees had therefore been accommodated in designated locations while urging the Rohingya community in Malaysia to respect local laws and avoid disrupting public life.
