Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Amin Ur Rashid has said the current government is firmly committed to protecting the religious freedom of every citizen and preserving communal harmony across the country.
The minister made the remarks as the chief guest while addressing the traditional Ratha Yatra festival of the Hindu community in Cumilla on Thursday.
“Bangladesh is a land of communal harmony with a history spanning thousands of years. The history of Cumilla is also one of peaceful coexistence among Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian communities,” the minister said.
He noted that certain vested interests had historically attempted to sow communal discord for personal gain, but had never succeeded because of the vigilance and unity of the people.
“We believe that no one will succeed in any attempt to undermine our communal harmony in the future either. Just as our ancestors lived together with mutual respect and affection, we must also leave behind a peaceful and harmonious Bangladesh for future generations,” he added.
“No religion in the world supports injustice. Every faith teaches justice, human welfare and peace. Therefore, religion should not be used as a tool for division, but as a means to strengthen human values and harmony.”
Appreciating the enthusiastic participation of the local Hindu community and the general public, the minister said the large gathering and well-organized event reflected the growing spirit of mutual brotherhood.
He urged everyone to uphold tolerance, harmony and mutual respect to build a non-sectarian, peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh.
Among others, the event was attended by Md. Yousuf Molla Tipu, Administrator of Cumilla City Corporation; Udbatul Bari Abu, Chairman of Cumilla Development Authority; Rozy Akter, Deputy Commissioner of Cumilla; Md. Anisuzzaman (PPM-Seba), Police Super; Fatema Tuz Johra, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila; as well as prominent leaders and devotees of the Hindu community.
