Video leak fear drives Jobayed killing: Police

Jagannath University student and Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed Hossain was killed after nearly a month of planning over fear that private photos and videos involving a young woman would be leaked, police said in a charge sheet.

After around nine months of investigation, Sub-Inspector Md Ashraf Hossain of Bangshal Police Station submitted the charge sheet to a Dhaka court on June 30.

The charge sheet accused Jobayed’s student Barjis Shabnam Borsha, 19, Mahir Rahman, 19, and Mahir’s friend Fardin Ahmed Aylan, 21.

According to police, Mahir carried out the attack, Borsha planned the killing, and Aylan assisted in the crime. The investigation was based on statements from 50 witnesses, CCTV footage, mobile forensic evidence, DNA test reports and other scientific evidence.

The charge sheet said Jobayed was attacked on October 19 last year when he went to tutor Borsha at her residence at Roushan Villa on Nurbox Lane in Armanitola, Old Dhaka.

The following day, Jobayed’s elder brother Enayet Hossain Saikat filed a murder case with Bangshal Police Station.

Investigators said the killing was not a sudden attack. Rather, it was carried out after weeks of planning, surveillance and site visits.

Police said the investigation found that Borsha had relationships with both Jobayed and Mahir. The charge sheet said Jobayed was killed over fear that private photos and videos involving Borsha could be circulated.

According to the charge sheet, Mahir and Aylan had earlier threatened Jobayed and asked him to stop tutoring Borsha. However, Jobayed did not take the threats seriously.

The charge sheet also cited Mahir’s confessional statement, in which he claimed that Borsha repeatedly pressured him to kill Jobayed and helped plan the attack.

Plaintiff’s lawyer Ishtiaq Hossain Jipu said the charge sheet has been submitted to the prosecution department’s GRO branch and is now under review by senior authorities.

He said the charge sheet contains DNA evidence and Mahir’s statement recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The lawyer said the prosecution would seek justice for Jobayed and ensure that those involved are held accountable.
