Safari park planned for Rajshahi central zoo

The government has announced plans to transform the historic Rajshahi Central Botanical Garden and Zoo into a modern, scenic and international-standard safari park to meet a long-standing demand of local residents.

Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku made the announcement on Monday after inspecting the zoo in Rajshahi.

He said the zoo had lost much of its heritage and appeal in the past due to mismanagement, corruption and unplanned activities, but the government has now undertaken effective initiatives to restore and modernise the facility.

The state minister said an expert team will soon visit Rajshahi to assess the feasibility of upgrading the zoo into an international-standard safari park.

A comprehensive master plan will then be prepared and implemented in phases based on the team’s recommendations.

He also said allegations regarding the disappearance or relocation of animals from the zoo would be investigated, and necessary action would be taken if irregularities are found.

According to the minister, new animal species will be introduced gradually to increase biodiversity and make the zoo more attractive to visitors.

Responding to another question, Tuku said a modern meat processing centre (slaughterhouse) would also be established in Rajshahi to ensure hygienic slaughtering and marketing of meat.

He added that the project site has already been finalised.

Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Department of Livestock Services Director Dr Md Bayzer Rahman, senior district administration and city corporation officials, relevant departmental heads, and leaders of the BNP and its associate bodies were present during the inspection.
