Since the start of the ongoing football World Cup, reports of disputes, clashes, and conflicts among supporters of various teams have been surfacing.
Most recently, on Tuesday night, such unpleasant incidents occurred in various parts of the country surrounding the match between Argentina and Egypt. In Cumilla, a young man has lost his life following a clash that stemmed from an argument over the game.
Clashes have also occurred at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University over the issue of securing seats to watch a game.
In Jhenaidah, a young man was hospitalized after being attacked by one of the opposing groups. These reports are deeply concerning. Indeed, when a love for sports manifests as such violence, it reflects social intolerance.
The World Cup is the world’s premier sporting event. The excitement among the people of Bangladesh surrounding this tournament, held every four years, is remarkable.
Even though the country does not participate in the World Cup, its people have transformed the event into a festival of their own by supporting various teams, including Argentina and Brazil.
In Bangladesh, scenes of hoisting flags, wearing jerseys, watching matches together, and celebrating victories are joyful.
However, incidents of fighting, clashes, and even loss of life are deeply disheartening. In various countries across Europe and Latin America, violence erupts both inside and outside stadiums due to the actions of aggressive football fans.
Such incidents cannot be the hallmark of a healthy society.
Why should the victory or defeat of foreign teams trigger violence in Bangladesh? The purpose of sports is to bring joy to people, not to incite conflict; the true beauty of sports, in fact, lies in competition.
It is natural to feel disappointed when a favorite team loses. But, such emotions should never become a cause for hostility or violence towards others.
Sports provide wholesome joy, and the Football World Cup holds a distinct significance as one of the world’s major events.
This significance should be acknowledged through positive celebrations. All must act responsibly and they should refrain from provocative campaigns.
Law enforcement agencies must also remain vigilant in areas where there is a risk of conflict arising from this.
The frenzy among Bangladeshis surrounding the game has become a topic of discussion. While a positive portrayal undoubtedly enhances the country’s reputation, negative reports raise questions about its image.
A football match concludes in ninety minutes, but the negative repercussions of it can linger for a lifetime. One must not forget that, ultimately, the World Cup is merely a game; the value of human life, relationships, and social harmony far outweighs it.
