EC to apply national poll experience to local elections

The Election Commission (EC) has announced plans to leverage the experience gained from the national election in conducting the upcoming local government elections.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah stated that this experience would be reflected in all aspects of the process, ranging from polling station management to overall preparations.

He made these remarks on Wednesday (July 8) during a dialogue with stakeholders regarding election observation, reforms, and the electoral system, held at a hotel in the capital.

He stated that the contexts of national and local government elections are not the same; however, preparations for local government elections are being made by analyzing the experience gained from national elections.

In particular, there are plans to utilize that experience in areas such as the establishment and management of polling stations and other organizational activities.

The Election Commissioner stated that work is underway to update the regulations for local government elections. Simultaneously, initiatives have been taken to make future elections more effective and acceptable by incorporating the Election Commission’s own experience and various recommendations from election observers.

Sanaullah stated that the Commission is seriously reviewing the assessments and recommendations made by various observer organizations. Implementing these suggestions would enable the organization of future elections in a more improved manner.

He further noted that national and local government elections are held under distinct legal frameworks; therefore, the process of undertaking necessary reforms is moving forward through a review of the relevant laws and regulations.

He also mentioned that the Commission has completed the post-election assessment of the most recent polls.
