



Renowned painter Atia Islam Anne died at a hospital in Dhanmondi at 3:00pm on Thursday. Atia Islam had been suffering from cancer for a long time. She was 64.
Painter Atia Islam has depicted the position of women in society in colour and line on canvas. Just as she has depicted the attitude towards women in a patriarchal society, discrimination and violence against women in male hegemony, her
paintings have also revealed the story of feminist movements and protests.
The artist was born in Dhaka in 1962. She earned a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka in 1982 and an MFA in 1985.
She was cultural secretary of the Fine Arts Student Union during 1981-82.
She was a drawing teacher at Sunbeams, an English medium school. She ran a drawing school for children ‘Jhapi School of Art’
in Dhanmondi.
