Addl IGP Rezaul yet to receive posting

Nearly a month after being promoted to the rank of Additional Inspector General of Police, Rezaul Karim Mallik has yet to be assigned to any unit, even though four other officers promoted on the same day have already received postings. Mallik is currently serving as Deputy Inspector General of Dhaka Range.

According to sources at Police Headquarters and the Home Ministry, five officers, including Mallik, were promoted from DIG to Additional IGP on June 4.

In a Home Ministry notification issued on Sunday, June 28, the other four officers were posted to important units. However, no instruction was issued regarding Mallik’s posting.

He is due to go on pre-retirement leave this month. His failure to receive a posting despite promotion has sparked discussion and speculation within the police administration.

Some officials alleged that his posting has been blocked because of the reluctance of an influential group within the Home Ministry and Police Headquarters. However, no official statement or explanation has been obtained from the authorities concerned.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, Mallik was given charge as chief of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. During his brief tenure, several operations were conducted against former ministers, members of parliament, and influential leaders and activists of the Awami League government.

Around 300 people were arrested during that period, according to sources.
Sources close to Mallik and his family claimed that he and his family have faced threats since those operations. They said threats from banned organisations and security concerns had also temporarily disrupted the formal education of his two children.

Recently, a social media page linked to Chhatra League also reportedly issued threats of legal action and cases against him. People close to Mallik fear that in the event of any future political change, he could face retaliation, lawsuits or harassment because of the arrests carried out during his time as DB chief and DIG of Dhaka Range.

Earlier, during the interim government period, Mallik was abruptly removed from the top post at DB. At the time, speculation spread within the police administration that his removal was linked to the behind-the-scenes role of Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury, then special assistant to the chief adviser.

When asked about not receiving a posting despite vacant positions being available, DIG Rezaul Karim Mallik declined to comment. However, people close to him said he was disappointed over the matter.
His colleagues said Mallik had also been overlooked during the previous Awami League government.

After serving as Superintendent of Police, his promotion was held back for an extended period, and he was later transferred to less significant units. At the time, he was perceived as an officer aligned with nationalist political ideology.

Now, as his career nears its end, his failure to receive a posting even after promotion has brought renewed attention to administrative complications within the police.
