Sylhet court acquits three in Suranjit Case

The court has announced the verdict in the murder case of former minister and Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta. The court has acquitted three people as the charges were not proven.

Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar of the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal announced the verdict on Thursday (June 25). State Prosecutor (PP) of this court Abul Hossain confirmed this information.

According to court sources, the presentation of arguments in this case, which was discussed in April this year, was completed.

At the same time, the judge wanted to know the statements about the charges brought against the accused under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the same court on April 7.

The accused, who participated in the hearing, claimed innocence, including Labor, Employment, Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, former Habiganj Municipality Mayor and government party whip in parliament GK Gaus, former Home Minister and current MP Lutfuzzaman Babar.

It is known that on June 21, 2004, a grenade attack took place at a political rally in Dirai Bazar, Sunamganj, Suranjit Sengupta’s constituency. Suranjit Sengupta was delivering a speech as the chief guest at the rally that day.

A Jubo League worker was killed on the spot and 29 people were injured in the grenade explosion.

Suranjit Sengupta narrowly escaped the attack.
In that incident, SI Helal Uddin of Dirai Police Station filed a case against unknown persons.

Then, charges were framed against 10 people, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, then Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, and former Habiganj Municipality Mayor GK Gaus, in two cases related to the grenade attack on Suranjit Sengupta’s rally on October 22, 2020. There are 123 witnesses in the case.
