Jubo League leader dies in Chattogram jail a day after arrest

A leader of Jubo League died at Chattogram central jail on Wednesday, a day after his arrest, prison authorities said.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Alam,  joint convener of Jubo League’s Dhemsha Union unit in Satkania upazila.

Md Iqbal Hossain, senior jail superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail, said Nurul Alam was sent to jail on Tuesday afternoon after being arrested in a case.

“After being brought to the jail, he fell sick. When his condition deteriorated on Wednesday morning, he was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead,” he said.

Nurul Alam’s elder sister Bokuli Begum and brother-in-law alleged that his arrest was not politically motivated but was orchestrated by a local group over business-related disputes.

They further claimed that Nurul Alam was tortured by Detective Branch (DB) police after his detention.

The family also alleged that there was no case pending against him and claimed that attempts had been made on his life several times in the past.

They demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the ‘killing’.

Police officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the allegations.
