Released on father's bond

N’ganj MP’s son Sajib expelled from party

A sensational account of an enormous criminal empire – built through abuse of power, unprecedented extortion, and the leveraging of family and party influence – has been exposed following the detention of Khairul Islam Sajib, son of a sitting MP.

The political and administrative storm surrounding Sajib, the recently expelled senior joint convener of the district Jubo Dal and son of newly elected Member of Parliament for Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon) constituency Azharul Islam Mannan, reached its final act at the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police headquarters.

After extensive interrogation, the Jubo Dal leader was ultimately released into his father’s custody upon signing a strict undertaking that he would not engage in threats, extortion, or land grabbing in the future.

DMP Detective Branch Additional Police Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter, It is alleged that after extensive behind-the-scenes lobbying, MP Azharul Islam Mannan of Narayanganj-3 constituency secured the release of his son Sajib by submitting a written undertaking guaranteeing that Sajib would not engage in threats, extortion, land grabbing, or any similar misconduct in the future.

A responsible DB official has confirmed this. Moreover, As serious extortion allegations also exist against MP Azharul Islam Mannan himself, stern warnings have been issued to him as well from senior government and administrative levels.

Sajib’s history of recklessness is not new, but his criminal activities reportedly accelerated sharply after the political changeover of August 5, 2024, and further intensified after his father’s election to parliament in the 13th National Assembly elections held on February 12, 2026. Such was his dominance that not only ordinary locals but even the party’s own loyal leaders and activists dared not speak out against him.

His crime spree began after August 5 with the looting of approximately 50 million taka from the Meghna Toll Plaza in Sonargaon. He and his cadre force then established open extortion rackets across 43 large industrial establishments in Sonargaon.

He seized sole control of the scrap trade across all 43 units of the Meghna Group. Beyond this, he deployed 14 to 18 dredgers at night on the Meghna River for illegal sand extraction, sold off soil from government WASA land in the Haria area of Baidyerbazar Union, and pocketed revenues from around fifty illegal lime factories in the upazila.

He also became the principal controller of all government tender dealings in the upazila, including the Sonargaon Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation. After August 5, threatening people with fabricated cases to extort crores of taka from ordinary citizens and businesspeople became another major source of income – a trade locals dubbed “case commerce.”

Exploiting his father’s political patronage and his influential Jubo Dal position, Sajib’s syndicate illegally extracted crores of taka monthly from every sector of the Siddhirganj Adam Jee EPZ, the BSCIC industrial area in Kanchpur, and the Special Economic Zone in Sonargaon.

The key lieutenants running this vast operation were BM Dalim, Masum Billah, PS Selim Hossain Dipu, and Golzar Hossain. After his father’s election, Sajib took sole control of all truck stands, taxi stands, bus terminals, Kanchpur Landing Station, and silos, along with the Padma and Meghna oil depots in the Siddhirganj and Kanchpur areas.

He even seized full control of the notorious waterway extortion network of “Polythene Jakir” on the Meghna River. He conducted an unprecedented trade of installing members as acting chairmen of local union councils in exchange for money.

He went so far as to forcibly occupy the home of Momtaz Member of Pirojpur Union and claim it as his own property. When the victim held a press conference at the Narayanganj Press Club, she was threatened with death and forced into silence.

Most troublingly, even senior and long-serving BNP leaders fell victim to Sajib’s authoritarian behavior. Before the elections, he publicly mocked senior party leaders over their educational qualifications and organized torch processions chanting “Professor collaborators, beware!” – poisoning the atmosphere within his own party. He also made sharp derogatory remarks about the current Narayanganj District Council Chairman Professor Mamun Mahmud.

Following the February 12 elections, every underhanded tactic was employed to politically marginalize senior leaders in order to maintain sole authority for himself and his father in Siddhirganj and Sonargaon.

Most recently, on June 19, the main district BNP office in Siddhirganj was forcibly occupied and replaced with a signboard for MP Azharul Islam Mannan’s personal office, displaying photos of MPs from all five parliamentary constituencies of Narayanganj.

When this triggered fierce outrage and controversy, they were forced to restore the district BNP signboard on June 20 under strict orders from central BNP leadership. Even party activists and Jubo Dal members were deeply furious and fed up with the MP’s son’s unbridled misconduct.

The cup of sins finally overflowed on June 21. That afternoon, Narayanganj District Police, with assistance from Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police, detained Sajib from a hidden hideout in the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital. Additional Superintendent of Police Tariq Al Mahedi stated that Sajib was brought in for questioning due to the numerous specific extortion allegations against him.

The arrest triggered an immediate reaction from the party. On Sunday night, Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal Central Executive Committee President Abdul Monaem Munna and General Secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam Nayon issued an emergency notice permanently expelling Sajib from the party, including his primary membership. The Jubo Dal made clear that the party would not bear responsibility for the crimes of any criminal or extortionist, and that no leader or activist at any level should maintain any organizational ties with controversial figures like Sajib.

Though Sajib has avoided prison for now through his undertaking, the aware citizens of Narayanganj believe that unless the sources of power behind this syndicate and their godfathers are permanently neutralized, safety and peace of mind for ordinary businesspeople and residents of this commercial region will remain out of reach.
