Bail denied, actor Zaher Alvi sent to jail

A court has ordered the imprisonment of small screen actor Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan alias Zaher Alvi in a case filed against him for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Khan Iqra.

Actor Zaher Alvi surrendered before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin’s court on Thursday and applied for bail.

After the hearing, the court rejected his application and ordered him to be sent to prison. State lawyer Harun Or Rashid confirmed the information.

The actor’s bail application states that the accused is not involved in this incident in any way.

The plaintiff filed the case out of personal insistence and revenge due to a love marriage. There are no specific allegations against
him in the case file.

Iqra’s father Kabir Hayat Khan filed the case that night. He alleged in the case that Iqra was ‘forced’ to commit suicide due to long-standing ‘family feuds and various forms of torture.’

On June 18, several lawyers including Dhaka Bar President Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan filed a bail application for the accused.

However, the plaintiff opposed it. After hearing the arguments of both sides, the court rejected the bail application and ordered the accused to be sent to jail.

Incidentally, Zaher Alvi and Iqra got married in 2010. They have a son. Alvi’s mother Nasrin Sultana Shiuli surrendered to the court on June 4 and was granted bail in the related case.
