Ensure security without isolating leaders: PM to SSF

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday urged the Special Security Force (SSF) to ensure that security arrangements do not create a distance between elected leaders and the people, emphasising that public trust and affection remain the foundation of his strength as head of government.

Addressing a programme marking the 40th founding anniversary of the SSF at Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, the Prime Minister said security measures must protect national leaders while preserving their accessibility to citizens.

“As head of government, my greatest reliance is on the trust and love of the people,” he said. “Therefore, I urge the SSF, as a sophisticated and professional force, to ensure that the security cordon does not push the Prime Minister away from the people.”

Tarique Rahman noted that security management has become increasingly challenging amid changing socio-economic, political and geopolitical realities, alongside rapid technological developments. In response to these evolving threats, he stressed the need for continuous training, professional competence and the adoption of modern security strategies.

The Prime Minister said the SSF is frequently required to safeguard the head of government during large public gatherings and official events while ensuring that normal civic activities and public convenience are not disrupted.

Commending the force for carrying out its responsibilities effectively under such circumstances, he said maintaining a balance between security demands and democratic accessibility remains essential.

He also instructed SSF personnel to treat ordinary citizens with respect while performing their duties.
“While giving the highest priority to the security of important personalities, you must remain vigilant so that members of the public do not become victims of misconduct,” he said.

Highlighting the qualities expected of SSF members, Tarique Rahman underscored the importance of professionalism, discipline, integrity, loyalty and strict adherence to the chain of command.

He further stressed the need for strong coordination among security agencies, intelligence organisations and government institutions to enhance national security efforts.

Expressing confidence in the force, the Prime Minister said he hoped SSF personnel would continue to perform their duties with patriotism, professionalism and respect for democratic values.
