Bangladesh join the rest of the world in observing World Blood Donor Day today through a series of programmes aimed at encouraging voluntary blood donation and raising awareness about the importance of ensuring a safe and adequate blood supply.
The theme for this year’s observance is “Give blood, give hope: together we save lives.”
The annual event is observed globally to promote blood donation and acknowledge the contribution of voluntary donors. Blood Donor Day has been observed worldwide since 1995, while the World Health Organization has been coordinating annual observance activities since 2005.
The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Austrian-born biologist and physician Karl Landsteiner, whose groundbreaking discovery of blood groups in 1900 laid the foundation for modern transfusion medicine.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his contribution and is widely regarded as the father of transfusion medicine.
World Blood Donor Day is observed on June 14 each year in recognition of his achievements and lasting impact on healthcare.
As part of this year’s observance in Bangladesh, a rally is scheduled to begin at 8:00am at Bangladesh Medical University.
Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, Dr. Prabhat Chandra Biswas, will attend the programme as the chief guest.
