RMG workers protest over factory closure, dues in Bijoynagar

Garment workers of Texas Dresses Limited staged a large protest in Bijoynagar on Sunday, demanding immediate payment of their outstanding wages, benefits, and compensation after allegedly discovering that their factory had been shut down without prior notice following the Eid holidays.
According to the workers, they returned to their workplace after the Eid vacation expecting normal operations to resume. However, upon arrival, they found the factory premises locked and operations suspended. Some workers also said that at a separate unit in the Malibagh area, they saw a notice posted on the factory gate declaring that the establishment had been closed.
Feeling uncertain about their employment status and financial security, the affected workers gathered in front of the Sromo Bhaban in Bijoynagar and staged demonstrations, calling for immediate intervention from the authorities. The protest later grew as more workers joined, demanding clear information about the closure as well as full settlement of their dues.
The protesting workers alleged that they were neither given prior notice nor any official communication regarding the shutdown. Many of them expressed frustration that they had been left jobless overnight, despite serving the factory for years. They also demanded compensation in accordance with labour laws, including arrears, severance benefits, and other legal entitlements.
Several workers said the sudden closure has placed severe financial pressure on their families, as many are now struggling to meet daily expenses, rent, and loan repayments. Female workers also expressed concern over job insecurity in the garment sector, saying such incidents are becoming increasingly common.
Labour representatives joining the protest stated that factory owners are legally bound to provide proper notice, clear dues, and compensation before any closure or mass layoff. They urged the authorities to investigate the matter and ensure accountability.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the factory management regarding the alleged closure or the workers’ demands. The protest continued for several hours in front of Sromo Bhaban, with workers vowing to continue their movement until their dues and compensation are fully paid.
