Child welfare facilities set for improvement

The government is moving to strengthen care, protection and development programmes for orphaned, underprivileged and visually impaired children, with a renewed focus on improving facilities and services in state-run institutions.

Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain said the initiatives are being implemented in line with the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to ensure the welfare and overall development of orphans and street children.

“The government is modernising state-run children’s homes to make them more child-friendly. Various initiatives have also been taken to improve the living standards of visually impaired children,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while visiting the Government Children’s Home (Boys) in Ward No. 3 of Mymensingh City Corporation.

During the visit, he reviewed the institution’s overall operations, including accommodation arrangements, food quality, educational activities and healthcare services. He also interacted with orphaned and disadvantaged children and sought information about their education, recreation and sporting opportunities.

Emphasising the importance of child welfare, Dr Zahid instructed officials to demonstrate greater dedication and compassion in carrying out their responsibilities and directed them to take necessary steps to ensure the wellbeing of the children.

Later, the minister visited the hostel for visually impaired students at the historic Edward School in the city.

There, he inspected accommodation facilities, the educational environment, healthcare services and other welfare activities. He stressed the need for responsible and committed efforts to safeguard the interests of the students and ensure their proper development.

Among those present during the visits were Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner Saifur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services Raju Ahmed and local political leaders.

The visits formed part of the government’s broader efforts to improve care, education and living conditions for vulnerable children and students requiring special support.
