Ctg Hill Tracts minister Dipen Dewan resigns
Dipen Dewan, minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, has resigned from his post citing physical illness.
He submitted his resignation letter to the Prime Minister on Monday, requesting that it be accepted.
In the letter, Dewan said he had been suffering from various physical complications since assuming charge of the ministry. He said his illness had created difficulties in carrying out the regular duties of the ministry.
“In the interest of increasing the momentum of the current government’s development and administrative work, I believe it is necessary for me to resign from my current position,” he wrote in the letter.
Dewan is a lawyer by profession and previously served as a senior joint district judge. After retiring from service, he became actively involved in BNP politics in 2005 and was later made convener of Rangamati District BNP. Following the political changeover of 1/11, he served as president of Rangamati District BNP until 2016. He is currently joint secretary for religious affairs on BNP’s National Executive Committee.
Dewan had wanted to contest the 2018 eleventh parliamentary election from the Rangamati hill district constituency. However, he later withdrew his candidacy in line with the party’s decision after BNP nominated another candidate.
In the 2025 thirteenth parliamentary election, he was elected as a member of parliament for the first time as a BNP candidate with the sheaf of paddy symbol. After BNP returned to power following 17 years outside government, Dewan was given charge of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.
