Rooppur Nuclear Plant Adds Advanced ‘Smart Assistant’ System

An Operator Information Support System (OISS) has been installed at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. This advanced system has been implemented by Russia outside its own territory for the first time.

Rosatom Automated Control Systems (RASU) has successfully integrated the OISS into the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system of Unit-1, which is currently under commissioning.

On Tuesday (May 26), Dr. Zahedul Hasan, Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), confirmed the installation of the “smart assistant” system to The New Nation.

The introduction of this advanced digital support system reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to adopting world-class technologies for the safe and efficient operation of its first nuclear power plant.

According to a press release sent by Rosatom’s media wing, the OISS functions as a “smart assistant” for plant operators, enabling real-time monitoring and analysis of thousands of operational parameters. The system enhances data visualization, supports decision-making, and helps improve operational efficiency and reliability.

In this regard, RASU CEO Andrei Butko said, “The Operator Information Support System is designed to help personnel monitor and analyze the condition of the power unit in real time. By optimizing information processing and supporting operator decision-making, the system significantly increases operational efficiency and reliability. Its implementation at the Rooppur NPP marks another important milestone in introducing advanced digital technologies in nuclear energy projects worldwide.”

Project Director of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant construction project, Dr. Md. Kabir Hossain, emphasized the significance of the initiative for Bangladesh’s energy future.

He said, “The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is a groundbreaking project for Bangladesh’s energy sector. Alongside modern reactor technology, the integration of advanced digital solutions like OISS will help establish a strong operational culture and enhance the efficiency of plant personnel. This system will serve as an important support tool for the operators of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant.”

The system will remain restricted exclusively for internal use by authorized personnel of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

It has been learned that the OISS was first experimentally used at Russia’s Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant and has already been introduced at the country’s advanced Kursk NPP-2.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant consists of two Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors with a combined generation capacity of 2,400 megawatts. The Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactor technology meets all modern international safety standards and is already operating successfully in Russia and Belarus. Rosatom is also implementing similar projects in Egypt, Hungary, Türkiye, China, and Kazakhstan.
