Govt moves to make safer roads ahead of Eid

The government has stepped up a nationwide drive to improve road safety through coordinated measures, including stricter monitoring of vehicles, skilled driver training and major infrastructure upgrades ahead of Eid travel.

The government is working in an integrated manner to cut road accidents and ensure safer journeys for passengers across the country, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has said.

Speaking at a cheque distribution programme for road accident victims and families in Cumilla, the minister said the authorities are focusing on removing unfit vehicles from roads, increasing public awareness and producing trained drivers to reduce fatalities.

He said the government is also expanding road safety infrastructure through underpasses, overpasses, wider roads and safer U-turn facilities at accident-prone intersections.

Highlighting the government’s humanitarian approach, the minister said efforts are underway to rehabilitate families who lost earning members in accidents. Discussions are also continuing to provide affected families with priority in education, jobs and other public services.

State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Habibur Rashid said all relevant agencies have been instructed to work in coordination to ensure safe and smooth Eid travel across the country.

At the programme, cheques worth Tk 4.89 crore were distributed among injured victims and the families of those killed in road accidents in Cumilla.

Earlier, the minister inspected preparations for uninterrupted Eid travel at the Meghna-Gumti Bridge toll plaza and directed officials to improve passenger services.
