Allegation of unlawful vehicle detention baseless: Police

Police have rejected as unreasonable, fabricated and baseless the allegation made by Ms. Hira Khatun that Jashore Kotwali police illegally detained her vehicle.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) of Jashore District Police, Md. Mirajul Islam, made the statement at a press conference held with journalists at the conference room of the Jashore Superintendent of Police’s office on Tuesday morning, May 12.

At the press conference, he said that on March 27, 2026, locals informed police after seeing a red wine-coloured Toyota C-HR hybrid car, registration number Dhaka Metro-21-4113, lying abandoned for a long time opposite the Richman showroom in front of Kotwali Police Station in Jashore city. As no owner or driver could be found, police seized the vehicle at 8:15pm under a general diary in the presence of witnesses.

Later, Ms. Hira Khatun, daughter of Md. Asaduzzaman of Arpara village under Shalikha Police Station in Magura district, came to the police station and claimed ownership of the vehicle.

Police then informed her that the vehicle would be handed over to her if she produced the proper documents before the court and obtained a court order for its release.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Mirajul Islam said Hira Khatun has not yet contacted the police station with any valid court order. Instead of following the proper legal process, she held a press conference in Dhaka on May 11 and accused police of illegally detaining the vehicle.

He further said that Hira Khatun is a former organising secretary of the Magura district unit of Bangabandhu Sainik League. Several sensational robbery cases against her husband, Md. Ali Hasan, are currently under investigation, he added.

Jashore Kotwali police made it clear that the vehicle cannot be handed over without following legal procedures. The police official also said the allegations made by Hira Khatun at the press conference in Dhaka were completely unreasonable, fabricated and baseless.

Also present at the press conference were Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md. Rajibul Islam, and Jashore Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Masum Khan.
