Measles toll hits 350

Six children with measles-like symptoms died across the country in the last 24 hours, although none of the fatalities were confirmed measles cases.

Of the deaths, three occurred in Dhaka division, two in Chattogram division, and one in Mymensingh division.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued yesterday by the Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the release, 1,341 suspected measles cases were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of suspected cases recorded between 15 March and 11 May to 50,500.

DGHS Control Room data showed the distribution of suspected cases over the last 24 hours as follows: 565 in Dhaka division, 175 in Rajshahi, 116 in Barishal, 258 in Chattogram, 37 in Mymensingh, 66 in Sylhet, 97 in Khulna, and 27 in Rangpur.

During the same period, 118 new measles cases were confirmed, raising the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 6,937 since 15 March.

Between 15 March and 11 May, a total of 35,980 suspected measles patients were admitted to hospitals nationwide, with 31,992 recovering and being discharged during the same period.

So far, 65 deaths have been confirmed as resulting from measles infection.

Including the latest six deaths, the total number of suspected measles-related fatalities has risen to 350.

Dhaka division has recorded the highest number of suspected measles cases at 22,769, of which 4,720 have been confirmed as measles.
