Sabina Akhter elected as London Councillor

Sabina Akhter, a Bangladeshi-origin woman from Kulaura has been elected councillor for the fourth consecutive time from Stepney Green ward in the Tower Hamlets Council elections.

Earlier, in 2011, she made history by becoming the first Bangladeshi-born female Speaker of the Tower Hamlets Council, a moment of great pride for the British-Bangladeshi community.

The official results announced on Saturday (May 9) showed Aspire Party candidate Sabina Akhter winning by a margin of 1,000 votes, securing 940 votes in total.

Her historic victory in the diaspora has brought joy not only to the Bangladeshi community in the UK but also to her native area of Kulaura, including Baramchal, in the entire Moulvibazar district.

Councillor Sabina Akhter hails from Madhabpur Osmanpur village of Baramchal Union in Kulaura upazila. She is the daughter of social worker Faruk Uddin Sundar, senior joint convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP) Moulvibazar district branch, convener of the Kulaura upazila branch, and a well-known figure in the Bangladeshi community in London.

She is currently serving as councillor of Stepney Green ward under Tower Hamlets Council.

In addition to her responsibilities, she is also a member of the Cabinet for the Council’s important department of Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care.

Sabina Akhter’s rise in politics is long and commendable. She was associated with the traditional Labour Party for almost 20 years.

Due to her leadership skills, she also served as Deputy Leader of the Tower Hamlets Labour Group.

In June 2024, she resigned from the Labour Party due to disagreements over party policies and positions.

Later, she joined the political party “Aspire” and continued her political activities.
