2 more children die of measles

Two more children have died with measles symptoms at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barishal.

With this, the number of deaths due to measles symptoms and infection in the Barishal division has reached 31.

The hospital’s administrative wing confirmed the matter on Saturday (May 9) afternoon.
Hospital authorities said that on May 5, Mohammad Ullah, the 10-month-old son of Md. Abbas, a resident of the Badara area of Patuakhali Sadar, was admitted with measles symptoms. After undergoing treatment for four days, he died early on Saturday.

Acting Director of the Barishal Divisional Health Directorate, Dr. Mohammad Lokman Hakim, said that in the last 24 hours, 108 people have been found with measles symptoms in the Barishal division.
In addition, 111 new patients have been admitted to hospitals.

Aysha, a 7-month-old daughter of Ilyas, a resident of the Pagla area of Patuakhali, was admitted to the hospital with measles. After undergoing treatment for nine days, she died on Saturday morning, May 9, 2026.

SBMCH Director Brigadier General Moshiul Munir said that both children died due to severe pneumonia caused by measles.

So far, 1,769 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to this hospital. In the last 24 hours, 43 new patients with measles symptoms have been admitted, and 170 patients are currently undergoing treatment.

So far, the total number of suspected measles patients in the Barishal division is 4,464. Of them, 31 deaths have been reported, and 133 confirmed measles patients are currently in the division.
