Transport worker dies after clash at terminal

A transport worker, Delwar Hossain (35), who was injured in an internal clash between transport workers over the occupation of a counter at the Kadamtali Central Bus Terminal in Sylhet city, has died.

He died on Thursday (May 7) at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment after sustaining serious injuries. He was the son of Md. Azir Uddin of Baghbari village in Beanibazar Upazila. Confirming the matter on Thursday, SMP’s Dakshin Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ashrafuzzaman said that Delwar Hossain died while receiving treatment.

Earlier, the case filed by the deceased’s father at Dakshin Surma Police Station on Wednesday (May 6) is under investigation. The case has been transferred and is being treated as a murder case.

It is learned that clashes broke out between transport workers on the Sylhet-Jagannathpur route on April 27 over the occupation of the Transport Workers Union counter. During the clash, several buses and ticket counters were vandalized, spreading panic in the area, and several workers were injured.

Police were initially deployed to bring the situation under control, and later the army was called in to stabilize it. The situation gradually returned to normal. Seven workers were admitted to hospital due to the incident, and two have already died while undergoing treatment.

It is also learned that while the deceased worker was undergoing treatment in the ICU at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, his father Md. Azir Uddin filed an attempt-to-murder case on Wednesday (May 6), naming 19 people, including Sylhet District Bus-Minibus-Coach-Microbus Transport Workers Union General Secretary Abdul Muhim and worker leader Shahjahan.
