434 lives lost in accidents nationwide this April

A total of 504 accidents occurred on roads, waterways and railways last April. Of these accidents, 434 people lost their lives. In addition, 737 people were injured. This information has emerged from a report by the Road Safety Foundation.

The organization compiled the report based on 9 national daily newspapers, 17 national and regional online news portals, various electronic media, and its own data.

In the report sent to the media on Wednesday, the Road Safety Foundation stated that in last April, 113 people were killed in 142 motorcycle accidents, which is 27.97 percent of the total deaths. The rate of motorcycle accidents was 30.66 percent. Additionally, 102 pedestrians were killed in accidents, which is 25.24 percent of the total deaths.

The division-wise accident statistics show: Dhaka Division – accidents 23.54 per cent, fatalities 25.24 per cent; Rajshahi Division – accidents 11 per cent, fatalities 10.39 per cent; Chattogram Division – accidents 22.46 per cent, fatalities 23.26 per cent; Khulna Division – accidents 13.17 per cent, fatalities 12.37 per cent; Barishal Division – accidents 6.91 per cent, fatalities 5.94 per cent; Sylhet Division – accidents 2.59 per cent, fatalities 2.97 per cent; Rangpur Division – accidents 12.74 per cent, fatalities 15.09 per cent; and Mymensingh Division – accidents 5.39 per cent, fatalities 4.70 per cent.

Dhaka Division recorded the highest number with 109 accidents and 102 deaths. Sylhet Division recorded the lowest with 12 accidents and 12 deaths. In the capital Dhaka, 24 people were killed and 67 were injured in 36 accidents.
