PM focuses on audit reform to improve governance

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday stressed the importance of conducting performance audits alongside compliance audits to strengthen transparency in public expenditure.
He underlined that performance audits are essential to ensure accountability in the use of public funds for delivering services to citizens and for achieving the intended objectives of government development projects.
The Prime Minister made the remarks at an event where he was briefed on observations and recommendations contained in 38 audit reports covering compliance and performance audits of various government departments and entities.
During the occasion, Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Md Nurul Islam submitted the audit report for the financial year 2021-22 to the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday morning, according to Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abu Abdullah M Saleh.
Senior officials including Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Finance Secretary Khairruzzaman Mozumder, and representatives from relevant departments were also present.
Sources at the Prime Minister’s Office said the audit report has been prepared in accordance with Article 128(1) of the Constitution of Bangladesh and Section 5 of the Comptroller and Auditor General (Additional Functions) Act, 1974.
As part of this process, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of Bangladesh submitted a total of 38 compliance and performance audit reports covering 17 ministries and divisions, as well as various directorates, offices, institutions and projects, prior to their presentation in Parliament.
