Truck-pickup collision kills 8 in Sylhet

Eight construction workers were killed in a tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway on Sunday morning.

The accident took place at around 7:00 am near Telibazar Bridge in South Surma upazila on the Sylhet–Dhaka highway, when the workers were travelling in a DI pickup van towards Sunamganj to join their workplace.

According to police, a jackfruit-laden truck
collided head-on with the pickup van carrying the workers, leaving four people dead on the spot.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (Media) Manjurul Alam said that three critically injured victims died after being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, while another injured person died at a nearby private hospital.
“Four people died at the scene.

Three others died at Osmani Medical College Hospital after being taken there in critical condition, and another person died at a private hospital,” he said.

Of the deceased, six were men and two were women.

The injured victims were rescued by local people, police and firefighters and rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Police and hospital sources said several others injured in the accident are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, and their condition remains critical.

Following the incident, rescue operations were carried out by police and local fire service personnel, who recovered the bodies and transported the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Traffic movement on the busy highway was disrupted for some time after the crash, but normal movement was later restored.

Police have so far confirmed the identities of four of the deceased.

They are Md Suroj Ali, 60, son of late Khorem Ali of Bhati Para village in Derai upazila of Sunamganj; Mosammat Munni, 35, daughter of Abdul Basir of Seshti village in the same upazila; Mohammad Faridul, 35, son of late Nur Salam of Nurnagar area; and Mohammad Badrul, 30, son of Sujat Ali of Lalar Gaon area under Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet.

The identities of the remaining four victims have yet to be confirmed, police said.

The Officer-in-Charge of South Surma Police Station said the bodies have been kept at the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy and completion of necessary legal procedures.
