HC grants Ivy bail in two more cases
The High Court granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in two murder cases connected to the July 2024 uprising on Thursday.
A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order after hearing separate bail petitions filed on her behalf.
According to case documents, the two cases were filed with Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj over the killings of Selim Mondal and Abdus Salam during the July uprising. Ivy was shown arrested in the cases on March 2 and April 12 this year.
Meanwhile, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver its order on Sunday regarding government appeals challenging earlier High Court bail orders granted to Ivy in five other cases.
The Appellate Division bench, headed by senior justice Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam, fixed the date on Monday.
Earlier, the High Court had granted bail to Ivy in those five cases on February 26 following separate petitions. However, the state later moved the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the bail orders.
Acting on the plea, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division stayed the High Court’s orders on March 5 and sent the matters to the full bench for hearing.
Those five cases include four murder cases filed at Fatullah Police Station over killings during the July uprising and another case lodged at Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station on charges of assault and obstruction of public duties.
Ivy was first shown arrested in those cases on November 9 last year after earlier securing bail in several other cases. The state again challenged those bail orders, which remain pending before the Appellate Division.
She was originally detained on May 9 last year from her residence “Chunka Kutir” in Narayanganj’s Deobhog area and subsequently shown arrested in multiple cases.
