First DC confce under new govt starts 3 May
The annual Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference is scheduled to take place from 3 to 6 May, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman set to inaugurate the four-day event at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium at 10:30am on the opening day.
According to officials, 498 proposals have been selected for discussion from a total of 1,729 submitted by DCs and divisional commissioners across the country.
State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari told The New Nation that deputy commissioners play a central role in implementing government policies, particularly among marginalised communities.
He noted that this is the first DC conference under the current administration and emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening field-level governance.
“We want the field administration to perform its duties with honesty and efficiency. A strong field administration will ensure that people benefit directly. We are determined to implement the commitments outlined in our election manifesto,” he said.
The conference marks the first such gathering since the formation of a new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party following the 13th parliamentary elections held on 12 February.
Officials indicated that the conference is expected to provide strategic guidance for implementing the government’s electoral commitments.
In view of global economic conditions, particularly fuel conservation concerns, DCs will park their vehicles at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium and travel to working sessions using government transport.
A source at the Ministry of Public Administration confirmed that 43 working sessions will be held, covering matters related to 56 ministries, departments, and affiliated bodies. The selected 498 proposals have been incorporated into the official working papers.
On the opening day, DCs will participate in an open discussion with the Prime Minister, followed by a photo session. Unlike last year’s conference under the interim government, participants will also have the opportunity to meet the President.
The second day’s programme includes a visit to the National Parliament, a courtesy call on the Speaker, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin, and an official dinner at the Parliament complex.
On the third day, DCs are scheduled to meet the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court, along with participation in an official reception hosted in their honour.
The conference will conclude on the fourth day with final sessions, followed by a meeting between the Bangladesh Administrative Service Association and the Prime Minister at the China Friendship Conference Centre. The event will end with a formal dinner attended by divisional commissioners and DCs.
Throughout the conference, ministers, state ministers, and senior secretaries are expected to provide guidance and policy direction to the field administration.
